Graduate student groups are a great way to make connections within your field and across campus. They may provide sources of community along with support for conference travel and networking. The following list identifies organizations for underrepresented graduate students at the University of Utah. To find an updated list for all student organizations please visit the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) website. The website also has information for those who want to start a new group. We encourage you to start an organization/club if you feel there is an unmet need on campus.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)

The mission of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is to substantially increase the representation of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science, and other related technology disciplines. Since 1977, AISES has worked to substantially increase American Indian and Alaska Native representation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields as students, professionals, mentors, and leaders. AISES employs a “full circle of support” model that begins with pre-college programs, progresses into collegiate life, and then into the professional years of members and on into retirement.

Future Women Dentists

Encourage interest in dentistry as a career among women. Provide a support network. Provide members with female dentists in the area as role models. It will also provide shadowing opportunities, volunteer opportunities, and help with current and future school issues.

Health Science Multicultural Student Association (HSMSA)

The purpose of HSMSA is to form a cohesive network between students who study within the Health Sciences at the University of Utah and support each-others programs and initiatives to recruit, support, and ultimately retain those of primarily minority backgrounds to pursue education in the Health Sciences. We aim to help interested students prepare for a career in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, dentistry and medical research. Our primary objective is outreach and health education on campus and into the greater Salt Lake City area. HSMSA will provide educational opportunities for students, staff and faculty at the University of Utah, both on main campus as well as within the Health Sciences. We plan to provide tutoring services, health screenings, panel discussions, and medical school interview assistance all in an effort to strengthen and create a supporting network within the Health Sciences at the University of Utah.

Our mission is to improve the overall well-being of the underserved. We focus on the Latino community but extend our mission to any group in need, regardless of their ethnic, socioeconomic, or other demographic characteristics. Minority Law Caucus

The Minority Law Caucus (MLC), formed in 1986, welcomes all law students with an interest in issues affecting racial and ethnic minorities. The MLC is involved in student recruitment and counseling, development of training and employment opportunities, community service projects and social activities. The MLC sponsors a variety of speakers and programs each year, awards scholarships, and sponsors a scholarship dinner and auction at the end of the school year.

Muxerista Mothers

Muxerista Single Parents is a student group who looks to find a social and academic space for single parents of color on the University of Utah campus. We feel this space is necessary to ensure a support system for students with children who do not feel they fit into other university spaces as parents, and also as primary caregivers. In addition to this, we seek to create a space on campus that progressively and actively engages with issues faced as single parents in higher education. Through the Muxerista lens, which Anita Tijerina, PhD defines as “a person whose identity is rooted in a Chicana/Latina feminist vision for social change committed to ending all forms of oppression, including but not limited to racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, and citizenism, we seek to address these issues as they relate to our parenting strategies, as we continually navigate the academy.

Women in Physics and Astronomy (WomPA)

WomPA events provide opportunities for informal mentoring and sharing of resources, and also serve as forums for exchange of information and advice. We increase the visibility of women by highlighting important scientific contributions of local scientists and by participating in community outreach events targeted at encouraging young women in STEM fields. Formally, WomPA’s mission is to foster a sense of community among women in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, encourage networking and mentoring across disciplines and career stages, educate ourselves and others about issues important to the advancement of women in STEM fields, and increase the visibility of women in physics and astronomy.
